Another great thing that happened last year was…. Ana Cabrera from CNN wore my Fan Board earrings on air. Then she tweeted about it. The tweet from May currently has 8.6K likes! After Ana Cabrera posted about them on Twitter I got 25 sales! Fantastic! You can read about how it came about HERE

How are Fan Board Earrings are Made

Computers need fans inside to keep things cool. There is a lot of heat generated by electrical processing and if things get too hot everything stops. There are computers with multiple fans in them. Take-apart combines a gentle touch and brute force.

After the fan is removed from the computer, I have to get it out of its plastic casing. The hardest part is separating the board from the copper wired stator with out cracking it.

Once the board is out, I cut off remaining wires and file down sharp solder spots. A tiny whole is drilled and the earring finding is attached. The boards vary from computer to computer and come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

The IMAC G3 has a very unusual design - totally out of the box. (see image) Instead of a cube this computer is round, Inside I found a big blue motherboard and the fan was positioned blowing upward through the top of the base.

My work consists of bold colors and abstract forms, that interact with surface imagery. With playful, serendipity - disassembled technology is arranged to reveal hidden beauty. I have a background in Art History & Art Education and have been making sculptural collage with disassembled technology since 2012, when I started working at the maker space, Artisan's Asylum in Somerville, MA.
